How Often Should You Really Replace Your Toothbrush?
Share
You use your toothbrush every day, but do you know when it's time to say goodbye to it? Using an old, worn-out toothbrush can be less effective and even harmful to your oral health.
The 3-Month Rule
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. Over time, the bristles become frayed and worn, making them less effective at cleaning your teeth.
After an Illness
If you've been sick with the flu, a cold, or a mouth infection, it's a good idea to replace your toothbrush. Germs can linger on the bristles and potentially lead to reinfection.
Signs of Wear
If you notice the bristles splaying out or looking worn before the three-month mark, replace your toothbrush immediately. Worn bristles can be abrasive to your gums and may not clean your teeth properly.
Electric Toothbrush Heads
If you use an electric toothbrush, the same rules apply. Replace the replacement head every three months or sooner if the bristles show signs of wear.
